Going from my experience, fatness won't affect it, its just Space Marine armour is huge and needs stilts.

'Sup man, I built pic related out of mostly 12mm thick EVA foam, which is what I'd recommend you build the armour and the body of the gun out of.

I'd also recommend lurking around the Obscurus Crusade forums as its a forum based around 40k cosplay, and there are a few Scouts on there that would be worth you having a look at so you can see what they did and stuff.
