Well there's still the fact that a lot of females just aren't girly enough to look good cosplaying a female anime character. I don't have a small chin, cute button nose or big eyes so I'd just look unfortunate cosplaying something like pic related. So if I can find a nice design for a genderbend of that character, of course I'd rather do that and look at least decent than try to pull off looking way cuter than physically possible and look like shit.
But I understand how it can seem silly or stupid, especially if the cosplayer in question could pull off a cute girl character.
