>I used to attend at minimum 10 SoCal conventions every year
There it is then...
>as a con attendee and as a volunteer staff member.
...not only was that right, we're in similar positions too. Still, never been to California con at all, though that's changing at the end of this month (TouhouFest). Seems your scene is even bigger than I already thought. What are some good kinds there? Can say for sure...even planning for AX looks like the biggest logistical nightmare imaginable.

>It's awkward because this is 100% correct.
And yet, you've hit on the most "official" way to ensure you actually foster a "community environment" later in your post. Usually what I take to mean is "We want lots of young families who treat this like mini Disney i.e. in their own bubbles and 100% unconcerned with anyone else." So a self-defeating principle.
>Things like Ribbon Hunting and Scavenger Hunts and interactive panels are always an extreme plus.
and here's what I meant. This is such a breath of fresh air, because so few I attend do it.
>that's also something you can't, as a con organizer, actually emphasize or market.
Hard? Yes. Possible? Also yes. Since I've seen it done, it works surprisingly well. Granted...only one con, but that's all it takes.
