The thing is that while we can wave off big things, the small things bug us. I will never bitch at someone for following canon, but I will make minor changes like that just like people take the liberty of adding gills to seadwellers despite the fact that gills have never appeared in canon. Or when the size of horns or length of skirts are changed. Because it looks better and more reasonable.
If you are going to bitch at me or other people who make that decision then please do also bitch at people who use gradient on their horns rather than blocking the colour.
For me it is a deliberate choice because when I am in cosplay I'd rather look good and believable than 100% canon.
