I hand sew most parts of my costumes because the thread disappears better into the fabric than machine stitching. I use my machine mostly for inseams.

Of course it's going to look shitty when people are sloppy about it, but I find it dumb that the anons above are so convinced that hand sewers are cheap and lazy. Humans have been making clothes for thousands of years, and sewing machines weren't invented until the 18th century.

Hand stitching also takes a LOT more time and dedication than machine stitching, and is generally harder to get the hang of. In a way, it's safe to say that people who only sew by machine are the lazy ones.
