there really arent generic lolita meets in japan. its usually friends who like one brand. most lolitas in japan have wardrobes that consist primarily of one brand, so the lolita meets youre talking about would actually be a bunch of AP fans meeting up and wearing AP.

the western community lacked consistent access to new releases from brands and had to rely on secondhand sales, so we were more likely to buy whatever brand was available. fewer lolitas in the west have brand centric wardrobes, though that is slowly changing.

just look at how many japanese lolitas list their favorite brand in their profile.
