Tbh I used to be one of those American slobs. I used to be seriously depressed and even when I wasn't I felt like a slob.....makes since that I dressed how I felt.
I still do but, now I feel great so I wear cute thing that match my personality or mood atm. I even changed my wardrobe and gave away my old clothes.
I've never been asked why I was dolled up beside my proms (for obvious reasons). People instead smile, open the door, or are just friendly and compliment me.

tl;dr: Basically, I had depression and I went from looking like a foster child to looking like 1950's Barbie
