If you want them to be super straight and sit right, you need to have something pulling them straight and also in the direction you want then to sit while you dry them. Brushing and blow drying from above won't always give you enough control, as you are clearly finding. I use a paddle brush under my bangs so that I can see where the strands are sitting, and blow dry both sides downwards and towards the middle initially, then take the whole lot over a round brush and blow dry it out at 90 degrees so that it isn't super flat. My hair is naturally very straight, so you may also need to hold the ends between your fingers to get it dead straight as you dry it and then touch it up with a straightener. I only brush over the top of it right at the end, after it's cooled and basically sitting where I want it already
