I know there's certain methods to washing and retaining color too. What fabric did your friend choose because hers looks really nice.

I just never chose to use it because of reviews like these, But I know I need to research more.

Left is unwashed Right is washed
I used some hot water to dissolve the washing powder, then filled with cold water after that. Washing powder is phosphate free. Between each layer I placed a sheet of white paper so colours from a layer underneath won't show through.
