I can't seem to get my Battlefield Earth costume off the ground thanks to trying to recreate this monstrosity.

I'm close to just ditching and going with Kraft Punk because this is such a pain in the ass.

I'm looking to make a Battlefield Earth costume (Terl) and I'm having a hell of a time trying figure out how to create the outfit without having to do some sewing (a skill I do not have). What is the next closest way to get the look?

I can probably just go with some leather riding pants for the bottoms, but the top is proving difficult. It's like halfway between catchers padding and samurai armor.
