When I lived in a large city and took public transit to meets a lot, I would carry a pepper spray on my keychain, a knife in my purse, and another knife in my dress/skirt pocket (or bloomers pocket).

Sometimes I thought it was overkill, but in situations that were sketchy I felt glad to have it all.
