Notice the very first message from this historic archive mentions LaserDiscs. Laserdiscs were at the core of early anime fandom: a laserdisc is a 12 inch optical format encoded in pure analog, and LDs provided the highest quality anime experience back in the day.

Laserdiscs were the master source for the first fansubbing efforts, and have amazing LP record sized cover art. The lavish Japanese LD boxsets are amazing to behold (and huge!). I have a collection of anime LDs, and holding one of this huge discs is like holding a slice of old school anime history.

I recently bought the Maison Ikkoku 24 disc box in my pic from ebay for $50 (the original price was almost $1500!) from the original owner who imported it from Japan. It is sooo much cooler to hold these babies, then to just see some files from a torrent on a screen...
