My hand sewing is atrocious and I made huge messes with hot glue, but my Seregios puppet is ready for SDCC.

I hope he works out alright so I my will to fix some parts up for Halloween is not crushed.

I don't see as many cardboard signs asking for hugs and what-not nowadays. Yaoi paddles, yeah, been a long time since I saw those as well. A change for the better.

Finished most of my Seregios puppet, just need to airbrush it and do a few touchups. I'm torn between generally liking how he's looking and hating it. At least he's nearly complete?

I suppose if you… really… wanted to, you'd be able to find a way, but please don't fuck my dragon. That's not why I made it.

My plucked chicken looks more dragon-like now. The sleeves for the appendages are too big so I might take them in a tiny bit, and there's puckering for the scales everywhere, but at least progress is being made.

On the flip side, years later…
>Rise of the Guardians comes out, I want to cosplay from it even though I know a million other people will too
>Decide to cosplay the first version of Jack (the colonial-esque outfit)
>Talk to dad about making the staff
>Spend countless hours on this costume
>Dad and I work really, really hard on this staff
>It can break into two sections for easy transport and it lights up with EL wire that it activated by touch (powered by battery packs with leads running to my hands)
>It takes MONTHS to get this thing completed, but it looks pretty damn good when it's done
>The costume also takes forever to complete, but I am slow and methodical and except for the pants, it looks great
>I'm usually slap-dash, so this was a big success for me
>Even the wig turns out well
>But I was staffing at the con I wanted to wear the costume to
>Ended up working practically the entire convention, no time to cosplay, aren't allowed to cosplay while working
>Put it on late one night, husband and I go out and take some photos
>Makeup is pretty bad and the lighting is bad because it's so late
>I wore the costume for maybe one hour and I haven't worn it since
>I've never spent so long on a costume… and, besides the Brave Story costume, I've never worn a costume so little.

The staff still sits in a corner of my library and it makes me sad every time I see it. I could definitely just wear the costume again to another convention, but I was too old for the character then and way too old now.

Your story reminded me of my own horror…
>In college
>Love Brave Story, want to cosplay from it
>Gonna be Wataru, never mind he's like 10 and I'm like 20
>Dad helps me make his Brave Sword during a school break
>It looks really good, just gotta paint it
>We even make a sheath for it, just gotta cover it in a pleather
>Most of costume is easy, except his soft(?) armor top and helmet(?)
>End up making the helmet out of regular fabric, no support, it's super floppy
>Armor is chicken wire and lots of paper mache with a fabric cover
>Armor actually appears pretty nice, but when I put it on it's like wearing half a barrel because it's much too wide and round
>Running out of time, so I slap together a pleather slip for the sheath
>It doesn't fit well, but it'll do in a pinch
>Try to paint the sword, but the clear coat for the blade keeps making my sliver spray paint run and look odd
>Finally decide it'll have to do
>Paint sword guard, it looks like a blind second-grader's art project
>Go to convention, meet up with Brave Story cosplay friend, she looks amazing
>I look like garbage, I feel like garbage, take off costume after maybe half an hour

But that wasn't as bad as when I brought the Brave Sword home and my dad's face fell when he saw what an awful paint job I had given this amazing sword he did most of the work on.

I answered some of your questions in >>9072007, but for the others… Naw, I didn't have any scanlation experience. The scanlation scene was only starting to get big when I started. I got a degree in Graphic Communication, and it does help, but not to the point where I wouldn't be able to do the job otherwise. It's more the knowledge of various programs, the print process, and publishing spec that really helped. I have total free range of fonts for SFX but Viz has to own any dialogue fonts I use. I've never found it to be much of a problem because most of the time when I want to use something they don't have, they'll buy a license for it so I can use it. SFX are usually done in Photoshop, so the fonts are manipulated to fit the look and won't be necessary for the final bitmapped file. Dialogue is done in InDesign, so they do need the proper fonts for legal reasons. At least, that's why I believe it's that way.

I interned at Viz half a lifetime ago and had to letter a couple pages for some magazine stuff. Thought it was fun, so I asked around. They asked for my resume and then gave me three or four pages to letter as a test. Turned those in and a couple months later (dunno why it took so long) I was told that I had basically passed and was put into a folder of letterers. Luckily, a couple weeks after that I was offered a series and slowly but surely I got enough work to letter full-time. If you're interested, make sure you know how to use Photoshop and InDesign, and then perhaps contact HR through jobs@viz.com (I think?). I don't know if they're accepting letterer applications right now, but it doesn't hurt to try.

You could also try with one of the other publishers too, of course. I do a book for Seven Seas, and they seem to have a similar process. Maybe just reach out to them through social media and they'll let you take their test? (Seven Seas is also only partial sfx cleanup, so it can be a bit easier if you're just starting out!)

Pay varies… It's paid by volume now, and I currently get anywhere from $900 a book to $2300 a book. Depends on the series. Difficulty doesn't always seem to factor in, IMO.

I'm a freelance letterer mostly working for Viz Media. I'm given Japanese pages and a script and I replace the Japanese text and sound effects with whatever the script tells me to. I'm also one of the assholes that censors all sorts of stuff (though these days it's pretty rare to censor things).

The pay isn't too hot and I often work close to 100 hours a week (my choice; I want more money so I take on more series), but working from home is usually nice and I'm working on a lot of cool series. I really love it.

My own mother gets on my case regarding chores because I work from home. I work longer hours than my husband, get no weekends off, and rarely have holidays or evenings free (besides maybe an hour here and there to work on cosplay), but if I suggest that my husband do any cleaning around the house my mom jumps on me because "you're home all day so you should be the one doing all the chores." She also told me that marriage is a contract and part of that contract is providing your husband a child. It's super weird because she's usually like "rawr, fight the patriarchy" with this sort of stuff. At least she's stopped telling me I don't have a "real" job anymore.

>We keep trying to explain it to each other but are both failing to understand
>Now we're both doubting what we were trying to say and everything is confusing
>A month and a half to go, haha...
We'll get it worked out, I'm sure. I'm really lucky to have him helping me so much with this.

>Cosplayed Kurotabo from Nurarihyon for a few years
>Kinda obscure at the time, people always think I'm Miroku from InuYasha and I can't blame them
>Find out Viz is gonna announce they have the rights to the Nura anime, so decide to wear my costume one last time
>Go to Viz panel, feel a tap on my shoulder
>"Hey, you're cosplaying… oh, what's his name…"
>He's gotta be thinking of Miroku
>"You know, Naruto's dad…"
>What the… "Naw, sorry, I'm Kurotabo from Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan"
>"No, I don't think you are…"
>Panel starts, Nura trailer is shown, Kurotabo is totally in the trailer several times
>After panel, the same guy from before taps on my shoulder again before turning to his friend
>"This is totally Naruto's dad, right?" "I dunno man, I'm behind in Naruto."
>Correct him again, explain that I was from the series they JUST showed a trailer for
>"Yeah, whatever… Are you trying to trick me? You don't need to lie like that…"

Actually, now that I think about it, when people mistake my costumes for something, they frequently think it's Naruto. I was in a thrown-together monster fursuit once (rust colored fur, slender tail with a spike on it, scaled arms, head was like a bird's skull) and several people INSISTED I was Kyuubi. The color was… kinda close and the ears were similar, but otherwise????

Just have to do a few wig touchups, laundry, and pack. This is the first year I don't have a complicated costume or prop so everything is way more chill. I could get used to this.

I'm a bit worn on the "stuck in a game" stuff (but I love the "stuck in another world" stuff, huh), but I thought Log Horizon was pretty badass. It's not really about escaping the game, more just learning to live in it. Do we need rules? Do we need a government? Etc. It DID take me a couple eps to really get pulled in though.

Ugh, just a week, ughhh. Kinda upset because I dropped two costumes even though they were 95% done. I'm on staff and just wouldn't have time to wear them around shifts and group cosplay stuff. I had no groups for them and it's not like I slaved over them for months, so it's not a huge loss, but I should've dropped them earlier before spending all that time on them.

Hoping to make detention slips or something to pass out to any HeroAca coplayers acting up while dressed as Aizawa. I'll be cosplaying him at the Shonen Jump panel(Saturday 3pm) and if you tell me you like World Trigger, I'll give you a mini bag of Bonchi. If you see a Coconuts on Sunday or Monday with a tote bag that says "Shikada" on it, talk to me and I'll give you some dagashi. …uh, supplies limited though.

I'm making a Seregios (Monster Hunter) puppet in the style of the Death puppet in the picture attached. As the puppeteer, I want to be a background player to the puppet, but I'm not sure what wear. I was thinking something like a Bunraku puppeteer, but I'm that might be too warm to wear during Summer cons. Any suggestions?

I miss some of the old stupid drama. Not the serious "I'm gonna dox you" crap, but the petty bitchy stuff. It was dumb and I often felt guilty for reading it, but I had a lot of fun reading those threads.

I also miss when there wasn't so much lolita, simply because it meant more cosplay threads.

>>8974178
I'm not a tripfag (clearly), but just for being a namefag I got a stupid amount of shit from both tripfags and anons. I've been around since like 2008ish, but for several years if I didn't post for a while and then said something, I would get attacked by those new to /cgl/ for "jumping on a bandwagon by being a namefag" or thinking I'm a special snowflake. I had tripfags treat be asses to me because (once again) I want to be a special snowflake but I'm not cool enough to be a tripfag. It was weird. The only reason I started to namefag was because I was talking to someone about Baccano! cosplay in a thread and it just made it easier than continuously saying "I'm that person from this post" each time I replied. I liked it, it stuck. Etc, etc.

I'm sad that most tripfags are gone now, but there was a lot of thread derailing back in the day.
