I think the trick is to have ONE bold/playful/colorful piece and let the rest of the outfit be simple with subtle colors.
For a casual day, something like pic related would be nice with a pair of jeans or black leggings. Still cute, but not over the top.

It doesn't look too good, but despite the low bars I'm pretty happy.
