>How the fuck do cryptocurrencies work?
A network of computers that shares and encrypts a universal ledger of transactions. The whole world can see all Bitcoin transactions, eliminating the need for trust in the global market.

>How the fuck did it even start?
Some dude under the pseudonym "Satoshi Nakamoto" released a white paper detailing the technology, and developed the Bitcoin protocol. It has since been improved upon by other people, as the software is open source.

>How on earth can you start your own currency?
People take the open source Bitcoin software, modify it, and release it as a new currency. It can not interact with Bitcoin in anyway, it is a separate entity that needs its own network of computers to maintain.

>It's literally printing money?
Upon the creation of a cryptocurrency, all of the coins technically exist within the system, but "mining" (the process of confirming and encrypting transactions on the network) rewards people with coins slowly over time. They go from being unowned, to being owned.

We (at MtGox) will implement this new hash index in our transactions database and start working with it (we will announce a maintenance as we will have to stop bitcoin deposits too during the database schema update) and will start providing this new hash when customers are withdrawing bitcoins, litecoins, or any other coin based on Bitcoin we may support in the future.

We will also provide an API that will allow our customers to use this hash to retrieve the transaction hash as seen in the blockchain once the transaction is confirmed, and will hope others (blockchain.info?) will index this value one day.

We also invite other exchanges and businesses which may need to keep track of bitcoins they send to use this same method, since dealing with multiple variations of the same thing wouldn't be very productive.

If nobody does it, we will also post some test vectors for regular (in=>out) transactions in the near future."

Every time I see a bitcoin thread, I just shake my head and laugh.

You severely damaged losers are literally the Bronies of /biz/. You know, that sub-group of 4chan kids who obsess over the preschool girl show My Little Pony? You probably don't know since all of you pathetic losers are far too busy fapping to monetary fantasies and wishing that bitcoin prices rize to 1000.

Why on earth would a group of you no-lives cling heavily to something as sad as this? Is there some sort of mental sickness in you guys? Did you not have a childhood? Do you not have a grasp on reality? How can you allow yourselves to deteriorate to this?

At first, I figured it was one lonely kid making these threads and bumping all day while crying in the basement for being such a useless waste of life... but then, I realized this isn't one kid doing this. There are at least fifteen of you in these threads that are getting hard over the prices of bitcoin. There isn't any doubt that all of you autists are fat, out of shape, and friendless.

Is that the thrill you kids get from these threads? Is it the fact that you can laugh and sing and can't even get off of your bed to empty out your piss bottle? Do you not realize that this board doesn't exist for you and your buttcoin? If not, then WHAT THE FUCK IS YOUR FIXATION?

I'm speaking for /biz/ as a whole, and possibly, your families as well. Just stop. This isn't healthy. Stop now and try to live a regular life. How embarrassed must your family feel when they have to explain to your aunt and uncle that you lost all your assets playing in the jewcoin market.

Just stop already. Quit with the silly threads. OP, delete this thread. Kids, clear your browser history and sell all the bitcoins you have.

I am telling you this because I am empathetic and I care. Please listen to me.

Bitcoin will likely move up 3 orders of magnitude from where it's at now over the next 5 years. I think it's realistic to imagine that most of that will be front loaded on to 2014

I've been at it for a couple of years. And anyone who has held bitcoin for longer than 3 months has already returned 10x on their investment.

Of course I wish I would have bought $100,000 worth a year ago when the market cap was under $1 billion. But I only put a few thousand in at that time.

Let's remember what we're talking about here.

Bitcoin is the world's most powerful supercomputing network. It's operation cryptographically secures and processes transactions of non-counterfietable tokens across a globally distributed decentralized network instantaneously for little or no fee. It is perhaps the most important development for the internet since the adoption of HTML, and it is not going away. Bitcoin has been described by the earliest pioneers of major internet protocols such as HTML and TCP/IP as a the most important development in the last 20 years. The innovations it brings were considered to be impossible only 5 years ago. Bitcoin is a major development in the history of computer science and mathematics..

So you're free to ridicule us all you want. Join the long line of trolls that stretches back through the powers of ten as Bitcoin has grown out of $0.01, $0.10, $1.00, $10.00, $100.00 and for a short period even $1,000.

Beyond the technical achievements, Bitcoin has a profound role to serve the victims of mismanaged economies.

Twitter is a ~40 billion dollar company.

Seriously can you go troll in another thread. You're upset about something and we can't help you here.

It is a widely held view that Bitcoin can very well grow to a hundred times its current market cap. This is not some oddball 4chan thing. I've demonstrated that to you by linking you to a Wired article in which two very well known venture capitalists make the same point. One of these venture capitalists is also known for having seen the opportunity in creating web browsers and p2p tech. I'm sorry you're not satisfied with this.

I encourage you to learn more about Bitcoin before you discount it. I would start with Satoshi's paper at http://bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf

I'm sorry you're offended by venture capitalists. I'm sorry that you didn't buy Bitcoin earlier and get to ride it up 10,000% a few times. But you can stop being poor today. It's up to you!

The only way to get money in and out of gox right now is fiat. People are selling their BTC for fiat at awful prices to get anything at all.
That said, I've been around since early 2011 and gox had the opportunity to run with my money more than once, the most well known occasion being the mid 2011 hack. They didn't. I'm 95% sure today is just another unjustified panic.
I for one love me my cheap bitcoins I bought today with funds from before the december crash.

i like cheap bitcoins too, but i'll take them a little less cheap at coinbase, which isn't insolvent

This is not the first time this happens. I feel cursed. At least I bought doge with them.

I doubt gox is insolvent. And even if it is, I took enough money home already.

then why isn't every exchange shut down right now?

Because the issue is fixable without modifying the client itself. You just build in some more validation for your transactions and withdrawals and don't use txids as keys.
However, since it can still bite naive implementations, it's something that needs to be fixed in the client itself in the long term.

Also if what I've heard about gox having no test system is true, they dearly need that shutdown time for long-standing changes. Wouldn't be too surprised if Midas came soon.

bitcoin protocol didn't change, and all exchanges other than gox are up and fine

gox is insolvent, thats their real problem.. they had bad accounting practices and transaction malleability exploited that.. gox was watching transactions to see if they hit the blockchain by watching an element of the transaction which could be changed..

so when transactions went out they were looking at some transaction id X.

an attacker could then change X to Y and hope Y got confirmed by the blockchain first.. this had no effect on the amount of bitcoin being transferred or where it was transferred to..

but Gox's dumb system wasn't checking the blockchain for the origination address + amount + destination address to see if it was successful.. they were checking the stupid transaction id .. so they were looking for X when Y was on the chain.. soooo their dumb system believed that the transaction didn't go through and they recredited the gox user with the amount of bitcoins that were supposed to transfer with X...

that user could repeat that process over and over again..

my guess is that gox lost 50% of their reserves to people exploiting their dumb code.. they're insolvent

You'd notice that if you audited the amount of coins in your wallet from time to time, independently from tracking individual txes. Question is, did they do that and what client did they use for that.

They aren't fucking stuck, KEEP TRYING. I had to try for a month to get them out but one day it literally fucking worked for no reason.

>address not a bitcoin address
>click withdraw again, changing nothing
>coins withdrawn successfully

well lets say it's anywhere from 5%-50%.. either way they've gone fractional

people are so fed up with gox, that its possible we'll test the reserves in the coming weeks as withdraws are opened up

here's what to look for: If Gox opens back up with daily dollar value bitcoin withdraw limits, then they're insolvent. Meaning, if they say you can only withdraw $5,000 worth of bitcoin a day.

They will adjust that number to try and stem the tide and hope that it causes a greater panic, which would of course increase the price of bitcoin as people try to flee.. which would in turn reduce the number of bitcoins leaving, because fewer bitcoins = higher $ value .. and there's a limit on the $ value withdraw

their hope would be to ride out the panic

> either way they've gone fractional
if it's 5% I doubt they've gone fractional, that's a mere ten times the exchange fee. Back in 2011 they covered bitomat's losses (17k BTC) with their spare change.

> which would of course increase the price of bitcoin as people try to flee
I don't think I quite follow.

>I don't think I quite follow.
supply/demand curve would favor bitcoin over fiat because of the speed of withdraw.. lots of fiat chasing fewer and fewer coins (in their imagination if not in reality)
