The best way to use it is to download the client, move it onto an airgapped machine, generate a secret key (starts with an s), write down the secret key (you better check and recheck to make sure you wrote it down properly), copy the public address (starts with an r), and transfer funds from an exchange to the public address of your new paper wallet. Obviously, you won't be able to check the balance or move the funds within unless you access the wallet (using your secret key) on a machine connected to the internet.
