Why don't rich people build palaces anymore? It actually seems like a really interesting way to raise children they live there for their whole lives and you stay close and the palace is huge so it still feels like you are independent plus the architecture style never really goes out of style you just renovate the inside every few years. idk seems great to me

One servant get paid $50,000 per year. 50 servants to maintain a palace, so $2.5 million

Not worth it. Just buy a 200 square meter house. Can be maintained by 1 servant, only cost $50,000 a year.

Back then you needed a lot of room in your house because every day you would have one or more of your vassals (plus family) at your house in order to have a meeting. It was necessary to have regular visitations with your vassals in order to manage them. Versailles was built so that Louis could have absolute power over his realm b/c all of his vassals lived in his palace.

At least in the US, nearly all mansions built before 1950 would fail to meet the building code. It's also just kind of wasteful, if you were a billionaire sinking most of your wealth into one building, especially one that won't be maintained as a historical landmark, is risky and won't leave much flexibility to do other things.

FWIW, the top-end estimates of Versailles' worth is $300 billion.

For realzies its also fashionable to be "lmao im just like you peasants".

I think they get off on duping poor people that theyre the same when they arent, its not bad that theyre rich, being rich used to be classy and poorer people used to emulate that. Now everyone dresses and acts poor, instead of dressing and acting more classy even if they were.

They also brag about working 100 hours a week when they really don't need to work much at all to maintain wealth. Usually it consists of shuffling papers back and forth and doing interviews. To maintain the illusion that they work hard and they are just like the poor hard working common man. Rich people aren't distinct and don't have much of an identity anymore.

Rich people don’t build palaces anymore because the whole point of a palace is it’s multigenerational, and the same rich aristocrats in Europe who have gazillions are living in palaces already.

Yeah believe me I know rich people like this that complain how much they "work", but in all seriousness, most of that so called work is meeting clients in some fancy restaurant to talk business or flying first class out to meet some other client to talk more bullshit at another fancy restaurant.
