It's always a scam. There are two key issues that never change. Feel free to quote these if you ever run into a MLM fag:

1) The salesman should never have to buy in. Sales people should always be commission or salary. Asking the salesman to pay for product is a scam to inflate the company with employee money. Employee money is going directly to managers. Product itself is rarely getting sold.

2) If they believe in the product wouldn't it more more profitable if they just took it directly to market? i.e. Walmart, Publix, Kroger, gas stations, etc...

The answer to the above 2 questions always breaks down the MLM pitch into the obvious scam that it is.
