However, other than having a good 'name' for my university, it did not help me any better other than connections in the industry.

Had I been paying for my own college, going to a public or in-state university would have been cheaper and I would have gotten the same education.

Community college would not work, even though you'd be learning the same material. The appeal of having a 'big university' opened doors.

Your freind chose a specialty with a shitty residency, and incidentally low post residency pay.
If there are any aspiring doctors in this thread, do what you love but keep in mind that,as a general rule, the less specialized you are the more your residency is going to suck mostly because of simple patient volume. Surgical residency sucked for a different set of reasons but all in all I'd say I had it better than the GP and ped schmucks.
I also highly recommend going .mil with the HPSP, get paid to go through med school and get the full GI bill when you fulfill your contract, signing bonuses are also available.

No there isn't. Dentistry is cut throat in the US in metro areas and suburbs. Basically anywhere you would want to live is saturated with dentists. It's a race to the bottom for dentists just like MDs trying to beat each other out while insurance companies fuck us in the ass more and more each year. The dental associations have been in bed with the insurance companies for 20 years. Foreign graduates are pushed through private dental schools in 2 years and get a license equivalent to fully trained US students. Dentistry is a fucking meme for anybody out there wondering unless you go on a full ride military scholarship. It ain't worth it.

I should add to this that any areas that have a legitimate shortage of dentists have little demand for routine dental care. People that live in the sticks don't give a fuck about their teeth. No competition with other dentists but you can't make a good living and you're stuck living in the middle of nowhere.

At the enrollment office I was told "wow, with your SAT scores and low income background you'll probably almost get a free ride here". Now I'm a dumb little fuck at this time not really knowing what's going on, and I just agree to it. My mom was hardcore pushing me to do it, no hesitation, everyone saying "you can transfer out anyway". They really try to sell it and it's hard to say no when your parents are telling you to shut up they're doing you a favor and that it's for your future.

So I'm going to college, doing well, working at the same time, and all the while not realizing I was racking up tons of debt and I didn't get as much financial aid as I thought I would. Apparently I didn't write as many essays as I should have and being white/male doesn't help either.

Either way I dropped out and I got disabled to my student loans were forgiven anyway. But I understand why this happens. Dumb fucking moms get all excited and you're some stupid 18 year old that doesn't know what's going on really. Then factor in at the time I had no idea what kind of scam I was signing up for. Then factor in I wasn't really college material. I didn't really want to go, but I was so used to waking up and going to school and doing what I was told leading up to this point I hardly second guessed it.

College is a scam now. Don't direct your anger at the kids who are most often doing what they're told. Direct your anger at the loan agencies and the faculty who sat around and allowed academia to become a joke.

And if you're suffering with student loans, are poor and don't see a way out... get disabled, one way or another.

If you aren't going for Computer Engineering the only degree that matters is business at a target school with the intent of getting into a top IB/Consulting(Big 3)/Accounting(Big 4) position. Otherwise the only way to even sniff 100k is by having actual talent in an artistic field, working long hours at something undesirable, or sales/recruiting.
