>To our mind it seems a cruel idea, a perfect desecration, to cut down such a splendid tree…In Europe, such a natural production would have been cherished and protected, if necessary, by law; but in this money-making, go-ahead community, thirty or forty thousand dollars are paid for it, and the purchaser chops it down, and ships it off for a shilling show! We hope that no one will conceive the idea of purchasing the Niagara Falls with the same purpose!...But, seriously, what in the world could have possessed any mortal to embark in such speculation with this mountain of wood? In its natural condition, rearing its majestic head towards heaven, and waving in all its native vigour, strength and verdure, it was a sight worth a pilgrimage to see; but now, alas, It is only a monument of the cupidity of those who have destroyed all there was of interest connected with it.

>tfw you realise the most magical natural spaces, groves of ancient trees brimming with life and history, have already been cut down and sold by the ancestors of fat miserable children who care about nothing but money
>tfw you realise that even the most "untouched" natural spaces today are shadows of the grandeur and majesty of former forests, and that our species destroyed them for pieces of paper that made them feel important

Meh, self-awareness is more magical than any natural phenomena we might exploit, considering that if we continue to survive and advance we might be able to manipulate the laws of the universe itself. If we stop now because we don't want to step on some ferns, we would be giving up on that future, and the universe would be without purpose.

>If we stop now because we don't want to step on some ferns

We're destroying the whole biosphere at a rapid pace.

>continue to survive and advance we might be able to manipulate the laws of the universe itself

Keep drinking the technocrat Kool-Aid, the reality is we're nowhere near any species saving technologies. And if we do obtain such power, who says it's going to be shared with plebs like us?

Little addendum to this : while we have a shitton of natural parks, a lot of the european forests were cut down in the middle ages (to make more farmland) and was only replanted around the time of the industrial revolution when fertilizers raised the field outputs but wood became more important.
