So I was explaining to my wife about EOS and why all dapps will be airdropping tokens to people instead of selling them, while keeping 20% for them selfs. She asked why dont they keep all 100%? Somebody got good explanation for this?

wrong. it's a way to circumvent SEC. a project airdrops tokens to EOS holders and keeps a reserve for themselves. the community sells the coin on the open market for whatever price the assumed value is. if the free market agrees that the project has a future, the coin will be traded for a reasonable price and the founders can sell coins and collect funding from the exchange sales. if the market dumps the coin to shit (which will probably happen to 80-90% of the coins) then the founders get a quick reality check and the project likely fails. it's actually a really creative way to get funding that will allow projects to completely ignore the SEC. also an instant community is formed by airdropping the coins to EOS holders.

Sell from a contract at a set price vs create an ask on dex with a set price. It's literally the same and has identical regulatory consequences.

what you're describing is an airdrop+an ico. Only the airdrop is bigger than the ico part.
