You dumb fuck. My girlfriend's 19 year old brother killed himself a week ago. I had to travel to the other side of the world to make sure she's ok while she' planning his fucking cremation and then take the ashes back to their home country. Why her parents are not involved in that? Because her dad had to stay back to be with her mom that completely and utterly broke down.

If you have people that love you, you owe it to them to stay alive. You have not seen what your plan will do to them. You cannot imagine. You have no fucking idea.

Sadly 100% true. Here's a story for you.
Kid took his life in a foreign country.. His father flew out first then, followed by my gf and me. Apparently his mother freaked out badly, started having suicidal thoughts herself. Father flew back.

GF has to clean the mess. I 'm flying out tomorrow because of work. She needs to wait, while staying at the university's dorm (same building but different floor... ) where he killed himself, for 1 more week for police to finish investigation and for a cremation slot to be ready. Then she needs to bring the ashes back.

She hasn't stopped asking why. They were supposed to go on a trip together in 2 weeks. She says maybe if she planned the trip earlier. Maybe if she was closer to him.. Maybe.. she'll never find the answers. I 'm highly worried how she's going to fare now that she will be alone there.

Their dad, a fully rational person started "seeing signs". Apparently a dead crow or something fell in front of him on the day of the kid's birthday or some shit.... "must have been a sign". He also blames himself, maybe if he was less strict, maybe.. maybe...

Her mom apparently had a complete freak out.


What to tell these people to make them feel better? How to look at them in the eyes? Come on dude

I will stop replying at this thread because I do not want to derail it.
I only want OP to take into consideration some things s/he might have not put enough thought into.

The kid didn't leave back any suicide notes. He kept a diary, but there was no mentioned at about suicide or dark feelings in it. He actually wrote he was looking forward to the trip, and various musings about his dream-future. No recorded history of depression. His browsing history (his laptop was on and unlocked when the police arrived), was full of websites and searches on painless suicide (he passed with the helium hood method that OP also posted). But no searches seeking for help. No cry for help, no "I feel this way, how do I stop feeling this way?". He just did it. No warning and no final goodbyes.

I used to be of the impression that you control your own life and should be free to do anything you see fit to yourself. Drugs? Sure, have fun. Full-body tattoos? It's your face, go wild! Suicide? Your life, your rules.

After seeing how it affected these people my opinion changed fully. You really have no idea. Maybe there is this weird dream-like ideation of the family being sad at a rainy funeral day, remembering how great you were, tearing up a bit saying that you are now free. Well... no, it's panic and grown adults crying and shaking like little kids. Belittling themselves trying to find some meaning.
Little things... opening gmail hovering over the kid's name at the hangouts sidebar and starting to shake.

Fucking terrible man. This isn't about how great life can be. This is about how selfishly one can destroy those who made the mistake to care and love a little bit too much you.
