I need advice /biz/. I'm going into my fourth year of college about to get my degree in History. Im getting paranoid about my career outlook and considering changing to CS. Is this the right move at this point? I feel like I got scammed as a 17 year old and am only recently coming around to the financial reality of higher education.

You're fucked. Here's what you do. Finish your stupid degree, take some cs classes, and start building a portfolio on your own time. Working through freecodecamp is a good start.

Changing major in your last year will do nothing. Why would you choose a history major? Start doing internships cause you are going to need experience for getting a job.

>degree in History
why would you even do this? How could you possibly think it was a good idea? I'm seriously curious, why do people get useless degrees like this? Please explain your thought process

Don't change your major this late. You'd be better off just doing CS stuff as a hobby and trying to use that for experience. Plus there are certifications that can help you get a foot in the door. If you don't want to go that route you could also get an MBA, join the military, go to lawschool (don't recommend), or get a PhD and try to become a professor. (pretty hard) I'm sorry they scammed you like they almost did to me, but you need to keep pushing forwards in life instead of living in undergrad limbo.

Youre fucked but its not too late. You can learn on your own or take college courses (much cheaper than bootcamps)

I studied history. Went to law school. I can’t pass the Californian bar, now i have 2 worthless degrees. I’m a bit sour now, results came in yesterday. A smart thing would have been to study a real word applicable field of study and read history books for fun. I’m really having a hard time justifying 4 years of analysis and reading history + 3 years of law school. So yes, if there’s still time get a minor, even if you do one extra year, in something where will likely be job openings like cs, finance, Econ, accounting, sciences, etc. My assumption is you can get your foot in the door with a minor at a decent paying job. Good luck, anon.

I would just finish it, you are almost done with it Is it one more year left?
History is a pretty cool degree to have. I would definitely hire people with History degrees. Most people would assume that you have a generally good understanding of the world because of your degree.
You can just start learning programming and get a second degree in CS after it if you want. Or just self teach yourself. No one really cares about CS degrees, what matters is whether you are good.
I hope you are not on a student loan though, I know there are lots of Americans here.

>> No.9516869

Just finish your history degree. Your major is not nearly as important as you think. What matters is having the degree period. Figure out a general idea of a career path and start intensely studying what you need to get started: qualifications and skill, etc. Put a LOT of time and energy into your resume, interviewing skills, networking etc. Reach out to alumni in the area you’ve chosen.

CS is a good field sure but don’t force yourself into it just because it’s supposedly great. Not if you have no interest in it. There’s opportunity everywhere not just in the latest trend.

>implying that staying even longer on a shitty degree path will NOT end up a complete waste of time

You guys really need to read up on the sunken cost fallacy. tldr he wasted so much time already, why waste more? For a shitty degree?

If you can get your degree with a major different than history OP, you should probably do that. If you think you can crunch hard and do it, then do it.

I would honestly just keep studying for the bar. It's hard, but you just need to pass it once. There might be good study strategies on the internet. Is there a reason you're having so much trouble?

>>9516896
The law school meme is so evil. You get into intense debt, and can't find a job. Why the fuck do normalcattle keep cursing people with this meme when an MBA would be so much better?

>>9516919
My parents always gave me shit advice. Dad wanted me to go into trades and other pleb shit, while mom was off in lala land saying "just do what you love" because she regretted changing her major after everyone told her that she would get a job with the degree she liked. College advisers were utterly useless too. I'm honestly amazed at how people always have advice to give, yet don't have any advice that's worth a damn. "ask God what he thinks" is a new one though, damn.

Opposite, my parents were poor enough to where grants cover 85% of my college expenses. I'm a good enough student to do well in the classes I just don't want to waste anymore time.

How to become filthy rich after graduating college no matter what worthless indoctrination degree you have:

1) Be employed or run a -profitable- small business
2) Buy a house and rent out rooms to your mates/buy a multi-unit house and rent out to strangers. If you arent living rent free/living at a profit, you are doing it wrong.
3) Save 50% of your income to buy income producing assets. Not being able to spend less than you earn, regardless of how much/little you are making, makes you a weak person who will never become rich
4) Avoid roasties, many will insist you buy them expensive stupid shit for the prize of having blown out meat curtains between their legs.
5) Do steps 1 to 4 for at least 10 years strait. If you dont have a high six figure or more net worth after doing this, it is because you were blowing your money on stupid shit instead of focusing on being a rich mother fucker.
6) Drop step 1 and become a full time investor, also find a superior young qt3.14 to impregnate (get a prenup, all of your assets earned before the relationship will mostly be protected in case of divorce). Redpill: Genetically superior offspring is the pinnacle of ultimate wealth.

Solid advice, but you may find this is harder in practice. If your life is totally JUST'd then what you can do is join the army, use it to clear or pay for education debts. Then use the VA loan they give you to buy your first property, and you should also have enough money saved up for the down payment. It's also possible to learn a trade in the army if you can't get a job that pays a minimum of 40k.

>>9517327
Good luck man! I hope you're not doing too badly with your current job.

You read a lot of books in those history degrees? You'd be perfect in any job that requires self-driven education like IT. Would just need to read a lot, which one can assume you already do.

Your edge over the typical IT autist/pajeet is your knowledge of history gives you insight into the psyche of people. This makes you a prime candidate for some sort of manager/coordinator type person while you make yourself more proficient in pure tech related things.
