I really don’t understand why they hired me in the first place after all the bullshit tests and interviews if they were just going to set me up to fail anyway. Why would any employer waste their time and resources to do this?

I work at a huge Japanese company. It's old and traditional so as long as I don't do anything criminal I've got a job for life. The pay is average but the benefits are insane and more than make up for it. The thing is I don't like Tokyo and waiting around for a transfer somewhere nicer would take forever. Promotions are also very slow and gradual.

I'm sure I could get a job elsewhere but not sure if the risk is worth the change in scenery.

In my experience, usually because higher management treats middle management (the people that hired you) the same way. That, or the fuckheads that hired you don't know how to solve the problems they are given, and are kicking the can down the road, telling their unscrutinizing superiors that the project failed because this new hire didn't know what he was doing.
