Keep in mind that the farther you are away from the lens the less a narrow lens will make everything look squished. Literally just take a mirror selfies from as far away as possible and zoom in in post.

Those cameras aren't made for selfies, they're made to take pictures from more than a couple feet away. As it happens the engineers who make the cameras are more interested in having a camera that works well for general purpose stuff and is cheap than a camera that will take a good picture from a few inches away.

This shit isn't hard, did you just take one picture and see that it didn't turn out the way you wanted and flip your shit like some chimp? Experiment a bit and you'll see what works.
