They were really the only mining company for a very long period of time and had no competition of others getting the block rewards. He hasn't sold any, Bitmain was able to operate on profits solely from selling miners and collecting transaction fees.

Satoshi also has around 800K of the 1.1M Bitcoins left, since funding multiple projects and companies.
