Don't read whitepapers, but use the same strategy when i want to research a coin through their website.
If the team is primarily composed of people of non-European decent, and/or if the team seems /fit/ or in anyway "cool", then i am also out.
I often also try to find a video where they talk in a non-scripted way, like a dialog or question from audience if they give a speech at some conference.
