Smile, have good manners, build rapport with customers, have a conversation in the process before getting into business, build a relationship with them, they need something from you and you need something from them. You both already know this without having to say it, at the same time, you must be direct with the customer of they dont like something ask the why, what dont they like, you need to qualify and learn what it is that they need from you that you can give them. Yes, appearances help. A LOT. But at the same time if you keep a clean look and can hold a genuinely interactive and natural dialogue you can do better than an Stacy that is completely retarded. Customers want competence, and confidence.

depends on what you're selling really. If you're selling Boeing planes the strategy is a bit different than if you're selling vacuum cleaners.

Personally I think the core skill is empathy, and that is where the sociopathic risk comes in. You have to be sincerely empathetic to the person you're selling to and then turn that empathy and the information you gather from the human connection against the person you are selling to. It's a pretty fucked proposition unless you are selling something that you actually believe in and you really think is beneficial to the buyer, but 99% of what salesmen sell are not in 99% of the sales situations.

To really sell is to cheat at a pretty psychological level. Everything else is just biz dev.
