Which is why they waited till they we're almost ready to launch their network to do the token.

This leaves people with no time to scramble to market with a competitive alternative. Not to mention they have a working normie product and a development support base to get programmers going. If you think people will barely trust these guys, what do you think will happen when some shitbag group tries to steal the Septr Protocol and call it their own and launch a competing network. It will only spark more interest in the real deal.
