I wanna take about 1000 dollars and jump into mining. Where do you guys stand on ASICs? Should I get an antminer or build a GPU rig?

Yeahhhh, I know they're really loud. Are you suggesting that GPU mining might be a better idea?

And what about burst mining?

I would give a 80% probability that Casper launches in 6 months. That's hardly long enough to get a ROI.

it's hard to mine profitably as an amateur unless you have basically free electricity.
To do it right is almost like having a job. Either with asics/gpus you have to get a good setup going. Calculate electricity loads (no doubt rewire) and install venting/soundproofing.

The way to turn a profit with gpus is to investigate new coins that might pump and mine/dump them. Hard to get real profits mining established coins. Same for asics but the pool of available coins is much smaller.

I have a Bachelor's in CS, so setting it up won't be difficult for me.

This.
>tfw years ago I mined 78 BTC and lost the wallet from HDD failure but tossed it because btc was nearly worthless at the time.
I can never bring myself back to mining. Nowadays it's just too much work.

But I do appreciate the input. It's just hard to figure out what exactly to start with. Is there a way to figure out the most effective way to invest that in mining? Or at least get close?

He's not too late, in fact the best and ridiculously cheapest way to accumulate new low market cap coins is to start mining early on. Fuck mining shit like BTC or ETH.

So what do I buy to mine though? Should I get a GPU setup?
