That being said, I've lived in America all my life and have practiced tipping for the majority of my time here when dining out, and I'll give my take on it, even though I generally don't participate in these types of threads.

My parents used to tell a story about a relative who would put a 20 dollar bill on the table and tell the waiter at the beginning that it was the tip, and anytime they were left waiting, or their drinks went unrefilled, they would remove a dollar. It's a fun story but obviously that wouldn't work today, and it also seems kindof rude.

My method is a baseline of double the tax, which if I'm not mistaken puts me around 16-18%. I will tip more, and I will tell my dining companions to tip more if my dining experience was particularly impressive. I wont go into details because this is subjective, and should be. But basically, you've had shitty service, you know what it looks like, you've had average service, it gets the job done, but excellent service where a hard working individual really shines, or the overall dining experience was superb, deserves additional compensation as encouragement to keep up the good work. One example had to do with an establishments excellent care for my elderly grandmother when we went out to eat with her one time. On the other hand, shitty service gets less tip, and sometimes if my experience is particularly poor, I will tip nothing, or little to nothing, and wont come back to that establishment (obviously). One time, we had a server who literally shit talked other customers to us, and brought me a raw burger, to which aforementioned shit-talking made it awkward to approach the subject of my substandard meal. I was upset with the waiter and the cook, so I left enough cents to round out the bill as a tip. I probably should have walked out on that one though.

It's stupid, but if you have to, it should be used to help indicate satisfaction.

Buffalo Wild Wings is one of the worst places to eat.
