Code is only a small part of the story. It mostly comes down to endorsemwnt and mindshare. Even if you pull most of the speculative value out of something, industry can't just start using a new flavour every week. Now, with link, they can bridge the old hills they've already chosen with blockchain tech that adds utility. They don't need to burn down a trillion dollar system and bet it all on ripple, or vechain, or stellar. They can silo their involvement with these new systems and their old cobol or whatever systs that have built them a trillion dollars and kept running like a swiss watch.

If anything, chainlink would let them less dependent on new, unproven blockchains because they have their dataservices and oracles in place. They can swap out the chain underneath if they don't like it. Or use several blockchains without maintaining duplicate oracles inside different chains. You could use ETH in America and NEO in China for example and both could use the same oracles.
