So what is this exactly and how does it benefit games like CoD, WoW? How does it benefit publishers like Blizzard among others? I read the whitepaper but I don't understand jack.

They replace servers with game channels. Think Bitcoin's lightning network or Ripple's payment channels, but for connecting games/gamers online.

No server means no downtime, no upkeep costs, automatic moderation. This makes a huge burden off of devs.

Also the real-world ecosystem means the average player will have a lot more disposable income (bc they earn from playing)

ok thanks for that but if its on a blockchain doesn't that mean that you'd have to make TX'es"(transactions) for moves/turns w/e just like with those ETher games? Wouldn't that turn players off if they have to pay for every move they make?

The function of game channels is to eliminate this necessity. Like Bitcoin's lightning network, game channels facilitate off-chain interaction between participants. Transactions only take place when game channels open and close. So if you initiate a wager of chess, for example, it would be one transaction to open the game and freeze bets, one transaction to broadcast outcome and release winnings.

Would people want that though? I can play chess right now for free without registering an account against thousands of other players from my browser.

I don't really see how this improves that experience

For people who want to wager this is a big advancement as the game channels automatically moderate gameplay and escrow wagers.

Realistically though the major value doesn't derive from simple games that are already offered quite readily, the value comes from new possibilities with this new system of gaming. These possibilities are coined Play-to-Earn Gaming and Decentralized Autonomous Universes.

Play-to-Earn gaming is already exemplified by their pioneer project, Huntercoin. Essentially, gamers profit from harvesting and collecting blockchain-based and verified scarce resources.

Decentralized Autonomous Universes are the Pinnacle of Chilaera's potential. It's essentially a fully empowered VR world. They made a great medium post explaining how the OASIS from Reas Player One would be possible with Chimaera

Yeah it sound really cool and all but its hard to really think of the possibilities, probably becaues the tech is still mostly uncharted terrain so its hard to tell.

Thanks for explaining.

Will this revive Demon's Souls online?

No but it does solve the problem of online games shutting down because the games hosted on the platform are upkept forever. It would only die if nobody in the world cared to play it anymore

this would work so well with valve multiplayer servers, the modded ones. Spoke to the CEO and he said that FPS's could be added to the in ~1year

Yes, private modded servers are good examples for worthwhile adoption. They reference a Minecraft political experiment that had to shutdown due to being unable to afford upkeep costs in one of their medium posts.
