You don't have to use it now but that's not the end goal. The stated goal is to eventually make it expensive enough to move funds around on the main chain that it is unfeasible to use BTC as anything other than a store of value. This is directly from the mouth of one of the chief corecucks, not me. They don't want BTC to be an everyday currency.
