What’s a good first credit card to build your credit score?

>> No.8789191

whatever one you qualify for?

just pay it off

Depends on what your credit score is now. If you've had loans for a few years you may already have a decent score.

If you're a student, Discover has the Discover IT Student card which is a great card in general and I've never heard of someone bring declined for it. It turns into a regular Discover IT after you graduate too. I've heard there's some Capital One cards with little to no credit necessary to get. If your credit is completely and utterly fucked or non-existent then just get a secured credit card from any bank. It'll build credit and anyone will issue you one.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that you'll want to keep your first credit card open forever, because your age of credit plays an important role in your credit score calculation. So just be sure not to get any card with an annual fee because you don't want to waste money to keep it open later

Get a secured card, 2-3 of them and use them for a year. They will refund your deposit after about a year and turn into real cards. You should have credit by then, easy pz.

One with a 0% intro APR and no annual fee

No reason to worry about APR if you pay your bill in full every month (which you should be in a strong habit of doing)

This is great advice, thanks. I’ll have to check out the Discover IT card.

Yeah it's a nice card. Some credit snobs meme about it because Discover is very aggressive in advertising it but the cashback reward layout it has is actually very competitive and a good addition for any credit card collection so I think it's a good one to hold on to long term. I think you can get an extra $50 bucks if you sign up for it with someone's referral. I'm not going to link you my referral because I think that's tacky but maybe see if you find someone's if you search around.

Don't stress about the different bonuses cards give too much now anyway. You can do all of that stuff later after you have your base credit built up over the next year or two

You're putting too much faith in OP.

What if I opened a mattress store credit card and then later they closed all those credit cards?

you need an income first anon.

I don't have much experience with store credit cards. If it's backed by a bank and the card is discontinued then they'll usually let you product change it into a different card they offer, retaining the credit history. If it's just a store then you might be out of luck and have to deal with your second card being your oldest on your credit report for the rest of your life

I got approved for the standard Discover IT card at 615.
