How do people lose money at this? Say I buy in at $2.65 a coin and it immediately drops to 2.63, did I just lose money? Or do I still hold my coin and can still sell at a later higher price?

Liquidated means that you are using leverage aka borrowing money. So if you use 10$ to borrow 100$ and it goes down to 90$, they sell the position and take your 10$

you can only get liquidated if you margin trade

if the coin you're trading with leverage loses ~50% value (-exchange fees) at 2x leverage you've lost 100% of your initial, and at this point you'll be liquidated

3x leverage liquidation is at ~33% loss of value

10x leverage liquidation is at ~10% loss of value

In a bear market, you altcoins will lose a fuckton of thier value. People who've been holding since ATH have lost up to 90% of thier value. Smart people who can see the bigger trend sell their alts and open a short position so they don't lose value.

Morons open a short position with high leverage and get liquidated by high volatility, even though they may have been right about the trend. Getting liquidated just means that there isn't enough money in your margin account.
