If you're making top 1% income in your 20s then you're owned by your company with long working hours. I know this for a fact. You're working over 90 hours a week. No, I have a pretty small fellowship. I'd prefer not to say, since I think it'd be pretty easily identifiable.

NSF would definitely be a better fellowship.

You should apply to more than just NSF. It's super worth it to apply. The fellowship I have has around 20-30 applicants per year for 3 awards, so roughly a 10-15% chance of getting it, and it represents an increase in my yearly salary of 13k/year over 2-4 years.

Say it's a 10% chance and 26k total salary increase, that means my expected reward for applying is $2600. It takes me maybe 8 hours max to do a fellowship application, which works out to $325/hr equivalent.

Apply to fellowships full time, and it will pay off.

thanks for the advice, but i doubt i'll remain in the program. at this point, i'm a third year student and still have no publications. the first year i just fixed lab equipment and gathered as much data for grants as i could. the second year my adviser recruited another student that was learning to use the equipment and then he gathered data for another grand. the first two years the lab also had no funding.

we finally have funding now, but i have virtually no motivation to continue. my plan was to finish in four years but now i'm looking at at least 5 because my adviser thought it was a good idea to recruit me when there was no funds to even replace faulty equipment and everything had to be half assed just to get it to work. this was also after a multi-year recruitment freeze so i had less than a year to learn everything from the sole remaining student in the lab.

i guess it was a fucked arrangement from the beginning, but like i said, i thought i could grind it out.

Yeah, but only the engineers are paid six figures for doing fuck all.

>>842668

Good school, but not ivy. High GPA with strong programming ability, data structures, and algorithms (demonstrated in interviews, which are technical, and basically exams). Various Silicon Valley internships each summer (lowest paying was $6000/mo). No side projects, because I'm lazy and doing extra work is not my idea of fun. That said, having side projects would help, since nearly everyone I work with has had some.

>> No.842697

>>842681
The best engineers aren't the workaholics. I think it was Bill Gates who famously said that given the choice between a lazy engineer and one who isn't, he'd hire the lazy one because the lazy one would find a way to make the job itself easier (e.g. coming up with some clever way to automate it).

But seriously, hiring the best is absolutely true. The interviews are tough, basically exams in which you demonstrate your mastery of data structures and algorithms, as well as programming ability. But for someone who passes all these rounds of interviews, the job itself will be pretty straightforward.

>>842686
It's the same at all of them. Apple, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, even Twitter. Tough interviews which only the best can pass, then high compensation and challenging, but fair work. Treating employees like shit and working them to death doesn't work, and the reason these companies are widely acknowledged as some of the best to work at in the world is because they understand that.

Some really encourage/want MBAs, others only need undergrad and just promote from within.

Seems to be moving more towards undergrad and promote-from-within though, as firms realize that it can be more effective to hire analysts and then promote them as opposed to freshly minted MBAs who have less on-the-job experience

Am I doing okay, /biz/? I have no bills other than insurance and a very small car payment with an amazing interest rate for someone with such little credit. Literally my biggest bill is probably food and I'm trying to find a way to eat out a lot less. I live in the upstairs of my house which is basically converted to an apartment and completely privatized from my parents. It's free to stay here.

What are the next steps I can take? I make more money than anyone else my age in this area. I live in a very poor region with low starting wages. My pay will increase from $13.65 to $17.35 in a year. I'm just here to get experience and work my way up.

I've managed to save up quite a bit of cash whilst also not sacrificing room for luxury. My wife and I don't have much time off, but I've bought tons of furniture and appliances in effort to redo our living conditions so we can put off moving out for a very long time.

What was an average day like as private investigator?
How many hours did you usually work per week?

Probably not what you'd think. I did corporate stuff so it was a lot of research mostly and the hours were pretty regular. The subjects usually had some relationship to the requester such as as a client, prospective client, investment opportunity, high profile hire, vendor, etc.

What did you study to become an Actuary? It seems like a very broad amount of degrees would fit. What would you say are required qualifications? This actually seems like a really challenging and fun job.

I think I'm doing pretty good for 18. Already moved out and providing for myself. If I can be on £30,000 ($46,000) at 20 years old that'd be nice.

I think you're doing just fine buddy. If I was in your situation I'd do the following
>increase your available credit by getting a no-free credit card (only use it for small purchases and pay off the entire balance each month before your reporting date so you're not charged interest)
>encourage your wife to get a management position at her job or hunt for one somewhere else while she works.

Calculation would say -$20k, but student loan is interest free and I only start making payments once my income goes over $55k per year.
