Honestly, Pepe (or "sadfrog" as he was called back then) was the most obnoxiously forced piece of shit meme I've ever seen on this site. It was literally posted by a single autist on every single board daily with the same stupid "you will NEVER be Japanese" text and everyone told him to fuck off. Eventually people made parodies of him like "you will never be a Japanese schoolgirl" or "you will never have your period in space while flying a mech from the Japanese government" or whatever bullshit.

Then it got to the point where newfags came in and thought that the posts were uniornic, and then began posting Pepe as a legit joke.

It was retarded. I still can't believe that faggot managed to get a shitty frog to the level of infamy that it has today. Wojack was the same as well, honestly. "I know that feel" poster was also told to fuck off and had his threads sage'd and ignored to death. All it taks to make a meme is just the persistence to post it enough for people to ironically post it long enough for newfags to not tell that others are only posting it ironically.

Here's an example of an organically grown meme. Puking Madotsuki was a common reaction pic used on /jp/ but eventually spread from crossboarders. Nobody forced it, made daily threads about it, or made some shitty "catch phrase" to go along with it. It was just a reaction image used like any other reaction image, but it became iconic enough that people made OC versions of it to post for reaction purposes. There is no "phrase" associated with it, there's no context, it just grew because people actually liked using it and found it funny.
