Brainlet here. I can kind of understand why supply chain logistics might be a useful application for blockchain. What I can't understand is why supply chain logistics would need random strangers holding "masternodes" full of coins and making fat stacks off it. Can someone fill me in?

Because you need the nodes to either add stability as part of the economic model, as well as verify the transactions. Its still decentralized so strength in numbers and all that.
