Should I fomo into LINK?

Smart contracts (on ETH, NEO, IOTA, on any platform really) can only interact with data on their own blockchains. If the smart contracts want to interact with data outside of their blockchain (which they will need to if they don't want the only use of smart contracts to be creating tokens and ICOs), they need to use oracles to do that. Oracles can be centralized (which there are multiple providers of centralized oracles right now) or decentralized (which there are none at the moment). It doesn't really make sense to use centralized oracles to feed data into decentralized smart contracts, so they're basically pointless and nobody really uses them that much. ChainLink is creating a decentralized oracle network, which is first of its kind. When they release on mainnet, which should be this year, it will effectively allow smart contracts to finally do all that cool stuff that you hear about like doing stock trading through blockchains, insurances, credit systems, decentralized fiat gateways and bunch and bunch of other stuff. They can do that now too but again, it would be useless with only oracles being centralized.

TL;DR: ChainLink is a massive project that's been in development for years that all the current smart contract platforms need to actually be used in the real world.
