I am also doing a integrated degree course at the IT department of a large insurance company.

No, the field is over-saturated.

I have a Chemical Engineering degree from a top 20 school and even though I have a (rather underpaid relative the salaries 5 years ago) control engineering job most of my graduating class is either unemployed or working crappy non-STEM jobs 2 years after graduating.

One of my friends did a 6 month internship at a research division for a large chemical company and the "full time" salary they offered him was so low that he couldn't take another non-STEM job to pay off his debt instead.

There is a culture of abuse in industry for offering absurdly low salaries or expecting hordes of STEM degree holders to work free internships (often doing the bulk of the work in the company).

They can do this because the field is so oversatured. It's like what happened to law only much much worse.

Oh bullshit. All you Mexicans do is flood in and drive everyone else out to take over this country one neighborhood at a time. You don't give a fuck about fitting in; you just want something that'll allow you to take fromt he white people, which is ANY major.

It's your country now. You get first choice with everything and whites are not allowed to be hired until you get what you want first.

The heavy dutty mechanic that we used to have fucked his back and had 2 hernias that forced him into retirement . in the fall I work construction ( mine job is seasonal ) and I never seen a rigger that has all of his fingers , the labourer that work on stripping Crews all have fucked up backs, cement finishers get all kinds of rashes and breathing problems because of the fine scilica dust! >mine job is seasonal so winters and fall I had to do other jobs
> no jewelry store would hire me because new to the country and no North American experience
> decide to take gemology courses online and got diploma from the GIA
>got temporary jewelry job during Vancouver 2010 olimpics because I speak 3 languages
>jewelry boss impressed offers me management in training job 50K salary + commission +benefits
>talked to mine boss (it was hard as fuck because I don't want to be ungrateful )
>mine boss tells me that he will retire at 60 because mine job is too demanding and wants me to take his place , he is 58
> offers me a race from 25/ hour to 33/ hour and promise a 75k salary position after the 2 year transition
>wife in university at this time and living in single income
>mine boss promise to train me on management stuff , no more mindless machine running for 12 hours a day
> wife pushes for me to stay in mining job because 75K for 6 months work every year is great money
> I accept offer
> 2 years passes and still running stupid machine for 12 hours a day
> mfw no training on management
> start to suspect that boss don't have any intention to retire , but he doest trust anybody else with his gold
>did I mention that I work night shift?
>an other 2 years go by and still make 33/hr (52K average for the 6 months season)
>not bad but not what promised
>wife graduates with degree
>now no need to be in this job

So I think is time for a change and try to recuperate the time lost, so my plan is to get into finance because I'm actually not a bad sales man , and I find finacial products fascinating . Still is hard to turn my back on a guy that acted like my dad and helped me when I needed it
