Who says there needs to be a diverse cryptocurrency market for cryptocurrencies to be useful/valuable? There isn't a diverse marketplace of internets each with their own set of websites, just one (or a few) that work really well, and it works so well partly *because* people agree that collaboratively developing a unified standard is better than everybody having their own incompatible one.
