>what is fractional reserve banking

The entire stock run up of the last 100 years and bubble of pretty much all assets is almost entirely a result of the expansion of broad money due to the proliferation of fractional reserve banking and banks maintaining lower and lower reserve rations.

For every dollar spent in this economy, less than 1% of that is backed up by an actually dollar, 99%+ is credit. Think about it, when you put a dollar in the bank the bank loans out that dollar. (The federal reserve provides minimum reserve rates but there are various ways banks cheat this requirement, so there is effectively no minimum reserve ratio.) That dollar is loaned to people to buy real estate, cars, finance consumer electronics, etc. from businesses who put that dollar in their bank account, where its loaned out again, repeated forever.

So when you put a dollar in the bank that dollar may be spend 10, 50, 100 times over and may be credited to hundreds of bank accounts. Reserve rates are effectively at zero now so its unclear what happens now.
