you can only short/long if you have some quantity of BTC that you're risking, and as soon as the BTC that you risked is eaten up by the price movement, you're liquidated and have nothing left.

So if you put 1 BTC on bitmex with go short with 100x leverage, if the price goes up by 1% you lose everything (since 1% x100 = 100%)

thats why it's dangerous to use 100x leverage, even the slightest movement in the wrong direction can fuck you.

I've used bitmex a fair bit but never over 25x leverage

Nobody should risk more than that in any case, unless the market changes. Bitmex is a hug craps table, and your money can go poof in an instant - and most likely will. It's pure gambling, you have better odds in Vegas, to be honest.
