It's an evolving project. For efficient wallet-to-wallet transfers it currently has no real competition (plasma may change that but who knows when). Free transactions place it in a different category than anything working now, and growing numbers of point-of-sale implementations will further decentralize the network, making it more robust. If it were aggressively-marketed as a lightweight, instant-and-free global remittance system it would begin to realize its value
