need some advice
I have to choose between an Economics and Finance degree.
What exactly does getting a degree in finance entail?
Which has better prospects?

First day here?

To answer your question: neither.
By the time you graduate jobs for humans will be obsolete and we'll all be on basic income.

I go to a decent business school (top 50 in world), which also has a top econ program at the university (top 20) so I'd like to think I have an idea of what I'm talking about.

Finance: You are figuring out "how much something is worth". You are valuating how much a bond/stock is worth, how much the company's future cash flows are worth, and basically, how much a company is worth. That's what your classes basically are.

In terms of career prospects, it REALLY depends on whether your school is targeted by big banks. Mine is, so many of my friends are in bulge bracket positions (Goldman, BAML, KKR etc) doing capital markets. Other shittier business programs in the area, well you got a degree to work as a bank teller.

Econ is a lot harder to say. You learn a lot of mathematical models of questioning usefulness. Only because the fundamental assumptions may be questionable at times so their applicability is suspect. Doing a bachelors will likely not be enough to get you a decent job, but the masters in econ program is just 1.5 years (including summer courses) so it's not too bad. You can expect to be doing econ reasearch, maybe work at the Central Bank if you're lucky.
