I'm kind of on the edge about either of them surviving a depression, but at least crypto is a serious candidate for a real currency, unlike gold. Crypto might become a currency, physical assets would store value.

I'm thinking that too, it's in their interests to not let USD fail, that would break our entire economy. Massive rate increases should be enough to tame hyperinflation and suck the money out of other markets to take the fall, but the USD should remain alive. I can't think of a reason for it to fail completely just because of economic events, rates can keep it stable both ways and what happens to the rest of economy is just background noise. So there's likely never gonna be a scenario where gold comes back.
