Short selling is like I borrow one bitcoin and sell it at $7500. I am now in credit one bitcoin. The price goes down to $6000. I buy the bitcoin I owe at $6000 and return it, profiting $1500. You normally do this with shares of stock.

There is no funds that are given to the lender, you simply return the coin before a given date.
