not really, it's the 'penny saved penny earned' mentality

i'm also pretty frugal, never eat out, meal prep at home, mostly drink water/coffee (brew coffee at home), and don't drink much alcohol or waste money on entertainment.

I generally save ~$20-30k/year more than most of my friends by doing these things. I get to take a nice vacation each year where many of my friends cannot afford to, and I get to invest most of this money into stocks or crypto which results in gains (money working for me) where my friends/coworkers do not.

I like my way better, I'm more comfy, more financially stable. I could afford to lose my job and not find a new one for ~5 years and still not be poor and homeless, where many of my friends/coworkers who are living the high life are actually just living paycheck to paycheck and keeping up appearances.

Frugality is the best way to live if you aren't part of the 1%. Always, and I mean ALWAYS live way below your means.

you can't really blame them though since every bit of external influence is telling them to do this; government, big corporation, media, advertising, its all telling them to SPEND SPEND SPEND and PAY TAXES! NOW! NOW! NOW!

the government, corporations, and media don't care about your compounded gains in 10 years, they want your money right now so they can be the ones compounding the gains.

at this point it's cliche to say it but humanity is nothing but tax and profit cattle for the elite, and I know people tend to look down on this opinion but I legitimately feel superior for recognizing this and being a frugal spender who is aware of and avoids media and corporate influence as much as possible.

Being right isn't cliché, because that's exactly what it is. Herd mentality is what is relied upon, doesn't matter if a few of us don't fall for it, the important thing is that the vast majority do. Best thing you can do is ignore the herd and do what you know you should do, generally the good stuff tends to float to the top, so if you have the right mentality you won't have too many problems being financially well off for your life.

I was thinking about that the other day. There's this constant point made by some that "anons do have cattle mentality just like normies".

What you don't realise is what you seem to perceive as cattle mentality is actually people getting /naturally/ grouped in a collective mindset - to put it another way...
>normies are manipulated into joining a social group, and then follow all their ideas and trends
>anons have their own ideas and trends, and end up grouping people with similar thought processes (aka autism and aspies)

That's why you see so many similar stories here about anons being bullied either as kids or even in adult life.

That also explains why chans became so strong with meme magick, and normies, although always social and with similar mindsets, are still just... Cattle, for a lack of a better word.

Unironically this.
You only pack a lunch because you don't have anything more profitable to do with your time.
I can't personally speak to why your coworkers would spend money frivolously, but what you're doing is just as frivolous, except with your time instead of money.

This. These people are slaves to consumerism and they will NEVER let go of it. If they double their salary, they will double their expenses. Yes, you'll probably spend more time driving than eating in your life (depends on where you live - in a city like NYC, no way). But, the average person will spend more than 3.5 years of their life eating. That's going to be 5% of your entire life, which you have committed to simply not giving a shit about. That sounds insane to me.

And listen, I've said this whole time it's not about you going out with your co-workers or not. If you despise it that much then fine, no reason to put yourself in those situations. But, if you were truly zen and enjoying your life, you'd actually be able to find the good in those situations and enjoy them as experiences. Some of my favorite life experiences have been ones far outside of my comfort zone and being able to just sit back and appreciate the moment because life is not JUST "what I want, when I want it". It's not just the good. It's the bad, the stinky, the gross... life is a wild ride filled with incredible experiences of all sorts. Why not enjoy them all to the fullest capacity you're able?

There's no reason to be so bitter about any of this shit. This is the world you live in, so you can either sulk in the corner over it or make the most of it. That's your choice. It is LITERALLY your choice to make, and you're choosing sulk in the corner.

You know who gets hired for the 250k+ jobs? Recommendations. You don't walk into an office where nobody knows you and get hired to be a VP or C level. And your odds of getting hired at any job increase ten fold if you were a recommendation.

You will be competing for new jobs with people who are recommendations from current employees, and you will lose and not get hired most of the time. The only place you have even close to equal footing without that advantage is at an entry level position.

As a VP level at my current company I can tell you of the last 4 people I've hired, 3 were recommendations. The last one has since been laid off. Coincidence? Nah.

OP needs to wake up and realize there is value to networking with your coworkers. You don’t have to go out everyday for lunch but never going out is career suicide.

Performance reviews and raises are as much about office politics as your quality of work. You also get your biggest raises by having job offers you can leverage in negotiations. If you are an antisocial beta they know that no one else will hire you and that you are trapped in your current job and pay. Even if you get another offer they will let you walk because they don’t give a shit about you.

Sure, but I did talk about net happiness as well, which factors in all of those other components.

The point is that saving money on food or spending money on food isn't right or wrong for everyone. Someone can be net happier spending more money on food than you will ever be saving that money. That is a real world possibility and likely a probability for many people.

I love food. My wife is a chef. We shop frugally at the grocery store (I saved 30% the other day only buying sale items) but we go out and have really, REALLY fancy meals for $250-500+ at least a handful of times a year. We both get incredible enjoyment out of that. For me, personally, spending money on food gives me a much greater net happiness than spending money on clothing, or my car, for example. It's all subjective.

Fair enough. I know people who are great cooks/chefs and they share a view similar to yours.

Personally I'm on a keto diet right now (last 2 years) which is pretty bland so its easy for me to eat same meals over and over and cook at home 99% of the time and subsequently talk down on big food-spenders, but I can respect what you're saying.

I think the main point is that while there might be people like me on one end and people like you on the other, the majority of society falls in the middle where they don't really have any clear motivate or concept of "happiness" involved in their habitual spending. They just go out for lunch because that's what they're "supposed to do" and then it becomes a regular thing, day after day, with no consideration for an alternative. I guess this predictable and habitual behavior is in large part what drives the bulk of our economy.
