My very basic understanding is that they're the foundation on which all the other shit is built. Ethereum, EOS, NEM etc. I use the term interchangeably with DAPP platform.

But then there are supposedly protocol tokens & DAPP like platforms that are building on top of Ethereum, for example 0x. What does this mean exactly? How are they different from your cookie cutter ERC20 utility token?
